New Travelodge Hotel

Travelodge built from shipping container based modular structures in Uxbridge, London.

An eight-storey Travelodge hotel is being built from 86 modified shipping container based modular structures. A steel frame skeleton is constructed and the modular containers are lifted into place and the facade is attached to complete the hotel. This is the first design and build of its type to be carried out in Europe.

Manufacturers of the modular containers; Verbus System and main contractors George and Harding required an edge protection solution to protect their workforce while working on top of the containers. They investigated various solutions, but struggled to find a solution that wouldn’t damage the exterior or having to drill into the interior of the containers.

Working closely with the manufacturers, Combisafe developed a bespoke solution in which a specially designed plate with a welded nut was connected to the containers at strategic intervals. Combisafe’s Expanding Anchor Sockets were fitted to the plates, and an Elbow inserted into them to provide the vertical punch up. The Combisafe Safety Posts were then placed into the Elbows, and the Steel Mesh Barriers attached, providing the bespoke edge protection required.

Rufus Harding, Managing Director of Verbus Systems said “This was a challenging edge protection requirement and Combisafe rose to it.”
